Crossover Lunges
Bodyweight Strength - The Crossover Lunge is another great bodyweight strength exercise that is highly functional for real life application. After mastering the standard Stepping Lunge and Walking Lunge then adding Crossover Lunges to your arsenal of functional lunging exercise is your next step.
Essentially the Crossover Lunge is exactly the same as the Stepping Lunge except that when you perform it you will step at a diagonal angle across your other leg rather than stepping straight out to the front. When you step back up from the lunge to the starting position you will have to push off of the ground with the stepping leg by utilizing your outer hip muscles much more intensely than you would if you were performing a regular stepping lunge.
The functionality of this exercise is due to the fact that in real life, not everything happens in a straight line. There will be many times in life where you will lunge down to pick something up, step over something, etc, etc and you will not be able to push up in a perfectly straight line as is a standard lunge. The Crossover Lunge trains you precisely for this very real scenario of life so that your body will be strong and functionally ready to perform this movement with competency and simultaneously with less risk of injury due to your more balanced strength development.
